Barns Green Cap Season Off with Awards Evening

What a season it has been for Barns Green RFC. A season with mixed results, challenging moments but unforgettable times topped off by winning the Sussex Plate in a fantastic final against Ditchling. The team, VPs and supporters gathered to toast the season with their awards evening at the club’s home in Barns Green.

Players Player - Nick Cooper & Paddy Pritchard

The players player award is considered the most prized as it is voted for by the players. It is acknowledgment from your peers that the effort and performance you put in during the season stood out amongst the rest.

This season’s vote was spread across many players which just shows how many standout performances there were but it ultimately came down to two players who shared the award. Centre and kicker Nick Cooper and Hooker Paddy Pritchard took the Players Player award.

Nick Cooper, Paddy Pritchard & Carl Brewster

Player of the Season - Carl Brewster

Player of the season is voted for by the coaching staff, club captain and team captain. This goes to a player who they felt consistently made the difference and who’s performances were consistent across the whole season. For his consistency in the lineout and his influence on the pitch, this years Player of the Season award deservedly went to back rower Carl Brewster.

Top Try Scorer - Jarod Van Blerk

This award speaks for it's self. The player who crossed the white line more than any other and this year was no surprise. Often in moments where a break through was needed this man turned up and managed to get the boys back into the game. With a total of 6 trys this year the award went to Jarod Van Blerk.

Clubman of the Year - Peter Burdfield

Clubman award goes to the person who has worked behind the scenes to ensure the club functions and games are played. This is decided by the club captain Thomas Bouet and this year it went to Peter Burdfield. Peter owns the land the Field of Dreams sits upon and has put a lot of effort into ensuring the pitch us cut as well as improving its draining so the winter months aren’t as wet as they have been in the past.

Richie Barrett Award - Alan Lambkin

The final award is the Richie Barrett Award. This is in honour of our beloved member Richie Barrett. A long-time servant to the club and original player when the club was born who sadly passed away. Similar to clubman, this award goes to someone who has worked hard behind the scenes decided by the VP committee and this year it went to Alan Lambkin who is not only responsible for the clubs’ finances but also organises and leads all of the VP events during the season.

Departing Captain

Lastly, departing captain James Dickson was presented with an engraved glass to commemorate his time as captain over the last two years. His hard work has given the club fantastic foundations for the next leadership team to continue to push the club forward. He steered the team through very challenging times and to finish it by lifting the Sussex Plate was the best way to end his era.

Congratulations to all of the award winners and thank you to every single person who has supported the club. From our brilliant sponsors all the way down to those who make the trek up to the Field of Dreams to cheer the boys on come rain or shine.

Here’s to next season.
